Summary
Nineteen‑year‑old Ed Bellamy believes he is an ordinary college student plagued by strange dreams. On his twentieth birthday, everything changes when a frightened youth bursts into his room and forces a mysterious package on him. Moments later, Winston, a supposed government agent, arrives demanding it. Ed flees with Maria, a young woman he has just met, while Winston kills the youth and frames Ed for the murder.
The package contains a videotape revealing that Ed is a “cyb”, one of several infants implanted with microchips to enhance intelligence. The experiment succeeded, but the chips caused prophetic dreams that intensify until they become fatal at age twenty‑one. The government shut the project down, and Winston now hunts anyone who uncovers the truth.
Ed’s only hope is to find Dr. Victor Heisenberg, the project’s creator, who is officially reported dead, a claim Ed soon doubts. With less than a year to live, Ed and Maria search for Heisenberg while evading both the authorities and Winston, who uses multiple identities to track them.
