Summary
In 2013, seven species of extra-terrestrial refugees, the Votans, arrived in Earth’s orbit expecting an uninhabited world ready for terraforming. Their unexpected encounter with humanity triggered political paralysis, the catastrophic Arkfall, and the decade‑long Pale Wars. These conflicts shattered most nation‑states and unleashed uncontrolled Votan terraforming technology that reshaped Earth’s geography and ecosystems. A hostile eighth species, the Volge, entered the war as well.
Decades later, veteran Joshua Nolan and his adopted Votan daughter Irisa arrive in Defiance, a multicultural settlement built atop the ruins of St. Louis. The town maintains neutrality between the human Earth Republic and the alien Votanis Collective. While salvaging Arkfall debris, Nolan and Irisa uncover a plot by the former mayor to hire Volge mercenaries to destroy the town. After stopping the attack, Nolan becomes Defiance’s lawkeeper, drawing him into conspiracies tied to Irisa’s past, a buried Votan ship, and the town’s internal tensions, most notably the feud between the human McCawleys and the alien Tarrs.
