Summary
Doctor Who is the world’s longest‑running science‑fiction television series. Its original 26‑year continuous run also makes it one of the longest‑running prime‑time drama productions in television history. The premise is straightforward: a mysterious traveller known only as the Doctor journeys through space and time with various companions, encountering dangers and adventures while appearing to travel in a London police box. Despite the programme’s title, no character is actually named “Doctor Who”; the protagonist is simply the Doctor, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who outwardly resembles a human being.
The Doctor’s companions, typically one to three individuals at a time, often include at least one young woman, and they serve as both audience surrogates and emotional anchors for the narrative. The iconic police box is, in fact, the Doctor’s TARDIS, a combined time machine and spacecraft capable of travelling anywhere in the universe.
The TARDIS was originally designed to blend seamlessly into its surroundings by altering its exterior form. However, because the Doctor stole the ship while it was awaiting repairs, its chameleon circuit malfunctioned, leaving it permanently stuck in the shape of a 1960s London police box: a tall, blue, booth‑like structure with a lamp on top. Police boxes were still common in Britain when Doctor Who debuted in 1963, but they have since disappeared from everyday use. The fixed design also served a practical production purpose, eliminating the need to build a new exterior prop for each story’s setting.
