Summary
In the aftermath of God’s unexplained disappearance, the archangel Gabriel leads an army of lower angels in a brutal war against humanity, whom he blames for God’s absence. While most higher angels remain neutral, Gabriel has rallied the lower orders, derisively called “eight‑balls” by humans for their pitch‑black eyes, into a relentless force known as the “dogs of Heaven.”
Twenty‑five years later, the remnants of humanity survive within a handful of heavily fortified cities. The archangel Michael, rejecting Gabriel’s crusade, has aligned himself with mankind and taken refuge in the stronghold of Vega, a city built from the ruins of Las Vegas. There he waits for the emergence of a prophesied savior who is destined to deliver humanity from annihilation.
