Summary
Set two centuries in the future, Earth 2 follows a group of human colonists seeking to establish a new settlement on the distant planet G‑889. After generations of environmental collapse, resource depletion, pollution, ozone destruction, and nuclear conflict, Earth has become uninhabitable, forcing humanity into orbital space stations.
Life in these sterile habitats has produced an unforeseen consequence: a degenerative condition known simply as the Syndrome. Devon Adair’s young son, Ulysses, is among its victims. Convinced that prolonged isolation from natural environments caused the illness, Devon leads an expedition to G‑889, a world located 22 light‑years from Earth and long known but never colonised.
A small group joins her mission, but their ship crash‑lands on the wrong side of the planet, stranding both colonists and passengers who had intended to return to Earth. Determined to reach their planned settlement site, the group begins a long overland journey, discovering that G‑889 is rich in natural resources and home to several intelligent species.
The Terrians, an underground‑dwelling people, communicate only through dreams. The Grendlers are nomadic traders whose motives shift between helpful and hostile. The Koba are small, unpredictable creatures, one of which becomes the pet of True Danziger. Despite peaceful intentions, the colonists quickly realise they are perceived as intruders.
