Summary
Part of the BBC's Look and Read Series. A century ago, an alien civilisation sent a probe to Earth to monitor global pollution levels. When the device resurfaces and detects dangerously high contamination, it transmits a distress signal back to its creators.
In response, a small, good‑natured alien named Ollie arrives in the coastal town of Southbeach to investigate. The town is already struggling with a mysterious illness affecting its children, who soon befriend Ollie. He explains that Earth’s polluted atmosphere is causing his species’ technology, including the probe, to malfunction. Worse, the failing probe is on the verge of exploding, threatening to destroy the entire town.
