Summary
Schoolboys Keith and David begin hearing rhythmic drumming beneath a hill on the moor near their homes and set out to investigate. The hillside suddenly opens, releasing Nellie Jack John, an 18th‑century drummer boy who marches straight into the modern world. Confused and frightened, he resolves to return to his own time.
David discovers that the candle Nellie Jack John leaves behind emits cold instead of heat and never burns down. Soon, other disturbances spread across the moor: standing stones shift position, the ground trembles, and all the pigs in the area mysteriously vanish.
Drawn deeper into the mystery, David follows the trail underground and disappears. Keith ventures after him, encountering spectral warriors and realising the moor’s ancient past is bleeding into the present.
