Summary
What begins as a routine murder inquiry becomes deeply personal for Yorkshire detective Ronald Craven, who is forced to investigate the killing of his own daughter. As he probes her secret involvement with the environmental group Gaia, Craven uncovers what writer Troy Kennedy Martin described as the “silhouette” of modern British politics, an opaque network linking Whitehall, American intelligence interests, and covert operations involving defence policy, nuclear waste, and environmental risk.
Craven’s investigation draws the attention of Darious Jedburgh, a formidable American operative who becomes both ally and catalyst. Together, they infiltrate the nuclear reprocessing facility Northmoor, where Jedburgh steals a quantity of plutoniun, later revealed in dramatic fashion during a NATO address.
Throughout the ordeal, Craven is haunted by vivid, recurring encounters with the spectral presence of his daughter Emma, whose appearances drive him deeper into the conspiracy surrounding her death.
