Summary
Elmer Van Hess (portrayed by Narciso Ibáñez Menta) is introduced as a modest and naïve man preparing for marriage when he is falsely accused of a crime orchestrated by a romantic rival, aided by an envious associate. Convicted and sentenced to death, he agrees to sell his body so that the proceeds may support his family. His remains are acquired by a scientist who successfully reanimates him by replacing his organs with artificial components, effectively transforming him into a quasi‑mechanical human with an extended lifespan.
Upon discovering the implications of his altered condition, Van Hess sets fire to the laboratory and escapes, sustaining severe facial burns in the process. Enhanced intelligence is among the modifications performed on him. He stows away on a ship bound for Egypt, where he encounters Abdul, a blind sage who assists him in crafting lifelike masks resembling human skin. Equipped with this knowledge and accompanied by Abdul as his assistant, Van Hess returns to his home city, driven by a calculated desire for revenge against those responsible for his fate.
A notable feature of the series is the range of characterisations achieved by Ibáñez Menta, who portrays multiple disguises adopted by Van Hess as he exacts retribution on his adversaries. The distinctive mask worn by the character throughout much of the narrative became iconic and was later revived in the 2007 adaptation starring Diego Peretti.
