Summary
Dr. Jacob Hood (Rufus Sewell) is a gifted biophysicist serving as the FBI’s Special Science Adviser, called upon to investigate cases involving advanced science, fringe research, or phenomena that defy conventional explanation. As the government’s final safeguard against the misuse of scientific innovation, Hood is tasked with preventing dangerous discoveries from falling into the wrong hands. He is protected in the field by Special Agent Rachel Young (Marley Shelton) of the FBI’s executive protection detail, with additional support later provided by Special Agent Felix Lee (Omar Benson Miller).
Brilliant but eccentric, Hood often becomes absorbed in his own thoughts, leading to lapses in attention and social awkwardness. His limited sense of personal danger frequently places him at risk, standing in front of a suspect’s fleeing vehicle to read a licence plate being a typical example, much to Rachel’s frustration. He is also an inept driver, prompting her to take control of all transportation. Highly knowledgeable in science, mathematics, and philosophy, Hood appears to hold atheistic views. He cared for his wife throughout her terminal illness, an experience that continues to shape his emotional life.
Rachel Young serves as Hood’s handler and protector, often remarking that her role is “to protect him from himself.” Though exasperated by his impulsive behaviour and frequent absent‑mindedness, she is deeply committed to his safety and views his quirks with a mixture of irritation and affection. Despite being embarrassed by him on occasion, she remains steadfast, refusing to be driven away as previous protectors were. Although admired by many male colleagues, she is portrayed as having few close friends, with Hood being the notable exception.
Felix Lee joins the team later in the series, having actively sought the assignment after assisting Hood on a case. Enthusiastic about the scientific nature of the work, he becomes the team’s advance operative, scouting locations and gathering evidence ahead of Hood and Young. Despite his dedication, Felix occasionally feels underappreciated for the substantial groundwork he provides.
