Summary
The story centres on Anna Hastings, a brilliant but increasingly fanatical virologist convinced she has engineered R.D.7, a myxomatosis‑like pathogen capable of eradicating rats and, by extension, ending the threat of plague. Certain that success will secure her international acclaim, Hastings pushes her research to its limits. Her ambitions collapse when Peter Warner, a young laboratory cleaner, is accidentally bitten by an infected rat. The incident prompts her superiors to order an immediate shutdown of the project.
Resentful and unwilling to abandon her work, Hastings drugs Warner and transports him to a secluded boathouse on the Essex marshes, where she attempts to regain his trust by injecting herself with the virus as well. Her plan backfires: she soon becomes seriously ill, and with official channels now closed to her, she turns in desperation to Patrice Constantine, a shadowy financier whose interests lie on the fringes of legitimate medical science.
As her condition worsens, Hastings discovers that the infection may already have spread beyond her control. Haunted by the possibility that she has triggered a nationwide epidemic and abandoned by Warner, she reluctantly accepts Constantine’s dubious assistance in a last‑ditch attempt to contain the outbreak and salvage both her work and her conscience.
