Summary
Eureka centres on a clandestine community populated exclusively by the most exceptional scientific minds in the United States. In the aftermath of World War II, Albert Einstein recognised that the nation’s future would be defined by scientific innovation. The near‑catastrophic implications of the atomic bomb underscored the need for America to ensure it would never again be technologically outpaced by rival powers.
With Einstein’s guidance, and that of other trusted advisors, President Harry S. Truman authorised the creation of a top‑secret residential community in a remote region of the Pacific Northwest. The town would not appear on any map and would remain unknown to the public, accessible only to those with the highest levels of clearance. Subtle references throughout the series suggest a location in Oregon, maps and an Oregon state flag appear in the sheriff’s office, though other hints imply proximity to Idaho.
This hidden settlement was designed to house the nation’s greatest thinkers and safeguard its most sensitive scientific endeavours. Its residents were provided with an environment free from external pressures, enabling them to pursue groundbreaking research without distraction. Leading architects and planners were commissioned to create an idyllic community equipped with the finest facilities.
From these origins, the town of Eureka emerged. Over the subsequent fifty years, its inhabitants have been responsible for many of humanity’s most significant scientific advancements. Yet, with experimentation comes risk, and decades of trial and error have produced their share of catastrophic miscalculations, global warming is cited as one such unintended consequence.
Although Eureka faces many of the same challenges as any small town, the combination of extraordinary intellect and virtually unlimited resources often magnifies these issues into crises of national or even global significance. While transporting a fugitive, later revealed to be his rebellious teenage daughter, Zoe, back to Los Angeles, U.S. Marshal Jack Carter becomes entangled in the town’s latest scientific mishap. Following an accident that injures the sitting sheriff, Carter unexpectedly finds himself appointed as Eureka’s new chief law‑enforcement officer.
