Summary
Near the end of World War II, a mysterious craft crashes in Alaska’s Brooks Range. Its occupants appear human but are revealed to be extraterrestrials whose DNA differs slightly from ours and who age far more slowly. Ninety‑seven survivors are captured and detained at a secret facility on the fictional Mount Inostranka after refusing to reveal their origins. The remaining survivors, later known as the Sleepers, escape with minor injuries and quietly blend into human society.
Decades later, newly inaugurated U.S. President Martinez learns of the detainees and plans to release them and disclose their existence, despite intelligence‑agency resistance. His announcement is halted when an assassination attempt using non‑human technology exposes the presence of additional extraterrestrials. The CIA launches a covert effort to locate these hidden aliens, unaware that the agent leading the operation is himself one of them. The Sleepers, learning of the crackdown, are divided between those seeking peaceful assimilation and those preparing for conflict.
Meanwhile, ordinary citizen Sean Walker becomes entangled in the conspiracy when his girlfriend Leila vanishes during a Caribbean cruise. His search for her ultimately draws him into the unfolding assassination plot.
