Summary
Set in the year 2063, Fireball XL5 marked Gerry Anderson’s bold expansion of Supermarionation into full space fantasy. The series follows the interplanetary missions of the World Space Patrol’s flagship craft, Fireball XL5, crewed by pilot Steve Zodiac, space doctor Venus, scientific expert Professor Mat Matic, and their transparent robotic co‑pilot Robert the Robot. They are occasionally joined by the Lazoon, a sound‑imitating alien creature with a fondness for Martian Delight.
Operating from Space City, a Pacific‑based command centre run by Commander Zero and Lieutenant 90, XL5 patrols Sector 25 beyond the solar system. The 300‑foot vessel features a detachable landing module, Fireball Junior, and specialised equipment such as jetmobiles for planetary exploration. Together, the crew undertake a wide range of missions across deep space, defending humanity and encountering strange new worlds.
