Summary
Set five centuries in the future, in the aftermath of a devastating interplanetary civil war, Firefly follows the crew of Serenity, a small transport vessel with no fixed home or political allegiance. Its captain, Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds (Fillion), is a former sergeant who fought against the forced unification of the planets under the authoritarian Alliance. Defeated and disillusioned, Mal now accepts any work, licit or otherwise, to keep his ship operational and his crew fed.
Serenity’s crew is a tight‑knit but unconventional group. Mal’s fiercely loyal second‑in‑command, Zoe (Torres), served beside him throughout the war and remains bound to him by duty and gratitude. Her husband, Wash (Tudyk), is the ship’s unflappable pilot. Kaylee (Staite), Serenity’s gifted and optimistic young engineer, keeps the vessel running against all odds. Rounding out the core team is Jayne (Baldwin), a hardened mercenary whose allegiance to Mal is genuine, though never entirely guaranteed.
With regulated companionship now legal across the settled worlds, Inara (Baccarin), a refined and highly trained Companion, maintains her own shuttle aboard Serenity. She enjoys a warm, platonic rapport with the crew while offering her professional services to clients encountered during their travels. The ship’s doctor, Simon (Maher), is a wealthy and reserved fugitive who joined the crew to protect his younger sister, River (Glau), a brilliant but psychologically traumatised prodigy fleeing the Alliance’s experiments.
Completing the ship’s permanent residents is Shepherd Book (Glass), a preacher whose presence aboard Serenity is motivated by a desire to spread his faith to the farthest reaches of human settlement.
Bound together by circumstance rather than ideology, these disparate individuals pursue opportunity and survival on the lawless frontier. Their journey is fraught with danger—from Alliance forces determined to capture them, to the terrifying Reavers, feral, cannibalistic marauders who haunt the outer edges of known space.
