Summary
Genetic scientist Edward Forester is driven by an ambitious and ethically fraught vision: to engineer a new species endowed with human intelligence but free from humanity’s capacity for violence. His research culminates in the clandestine creation of a human–gorilla hybrid, conceived using his own genetic material. The infant, born with a temporary full‑body covering of hair, is named Gordon, and grows into a being who embodies nearly all of Forester’s aspirations.
However, the experiment’s apparent success unravels when Gordon, shortly before learning the truth of his origins, begins a romantic relationship with Forester’s daughter, Nell. Confronted with this revelation, Gordon demands to meet his biological mother, Mary, the gorilla who carried him to term. The encounter ends tragically when Mary, overwhelmed by instinctive aggression, kills her hybrid offspring.
In the story’s epilogue, Forester attends the christening of Nell’s newborn son. His pride gives way to horror as the infant emits a distinctly simian cry, leaving no doubt that the child is Gordon’s.
