Summary
Cade Foster is a successful salesman specialising in high‑tech corporate security, but for six months he has been plagued by disturbing nightmares and visions of a disembodied head. The strain is affecting both him and his wife. When a detective forwards Foster’s old police records to his employer, he is abruptly dismissed. Soon after, he discovers that his bank accounts have been emptied and his credit cards cancelled. The final shock comes when he finds a surveillance bug hidden in his home, and the number 19 painted repeatedly across the walls.
Determined to uncover the truth, Foster seeks out a man imprisoned for murdering his own family, who claims to suffer the same visions and insists that aliens are already on Earth. After the man’s apparent suicide, Foster finds a message he left behind: an address somewhere in the city. Foster’s wife, terrified by his behaviour, convinces him to check into a motel. Unbeknownst to him, she has already been killed and replaced by an alien duplicate, which attempts to murder him. The aliens then place his wife’s real body beside him to frame him for her death. Foster escapes moments before the police arrive.
Now a fugitive, he follows the address and uncovers evidence that 117 human subjects are being studied to analyse their psychological and physical limits. Foster is revealed to be Subject 117, marked for elimination. Before he can process the discovery, both the police and the aliens close in. Captured by the extra-terrestrial's, he overhears that their invasion will begin with “the First Wave,” during which 19 million people will die. Their strategy depends on understanding human behaviour, knowledge gained through their test subjects.
Foster escapes before being drugged into compliance, and now carries the truth about the coming invasion. But with his life destroyed and his credibility shattered, he faces a new challenge: finding someone who will believe him.
