Summary
A mysterious global phenomenon causes the entire population of Earth to lose consciousness simultaneously for 137 seconds. During this interval, individuals experience vivid visions of their lives six months in the future, a worldwide “flashforward” that raises urgent questions about fate, causality, and the stability of the timeline.
In Los Angeles, a team of FBI investigators led by Stanford Wedeck and spearheaded by Mark Benford begins examining the origins and implications of the event. Benford brings an unusual advantage to the inquiry: in his own flashforward, he witnessed the results of the investigation he will conduct over the next six months. Using the clues he saw, case files, names, and fragments of evidence, he and his colleagues attempt to reconstruct the future investigation in the present.
The team pursues several leads connected to the phenomenon, including “Suspect Zero”, an individual who remained conscious during the global blackout; the enigmatic and dangerous D. Gibbons; and a previously unpublicised mass‑consciousness event that occurred in Somalia in 1991. As the investigation deepens, the agents confront not only the scientific and criminal dimensions of the flashforward but also the profound personal consequences of the visions.
The characters’ private lives become increasingly entangled with their glimpsed futures: Benford foresees a relapse into alcoholism; his wife Olivia sees herself romantically involved with another man; and other individuals struggle with similarly unexpected or unsettling revelations. Each must decide whether the future they witnessed is inevitable, or whether it can be changed.
