Summary
The serial is effectively a reworking of The Purple Monster Strikes (1945). It features Gay as a Martian agent, costumed identically to Roy Barcroft in the earlier production to facilitate the reuse of footage, who arrives on Earth to prepare the planet for a forthcoming Martian invasion. Operating under the name Mota (a reversal of “atom”), the alien’s first objective is to reconstruct his disc‑shaped rocket craft, a flying saucer in all but name, with the unwilling assistance of scientist Craven, who reprises his role from the original serial. From this vessel, Mota intends to launch a bombardment capable of forcing Earth into submission.
Reed portrays the young scientist who gradually becomes suspicious of the extra-terrestrial plot. The serial culminates in a well‑executed finale in which Gay, Craven, and their criminal collaborators are consumed by molten lava after Reed diverts an atomic bomb, causing it to detonate within Mota’s volcanic hideout.
