Summary
Dr. Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) serves as a medical examiner for New York City, applying his extensive knowledge of human anatomy and forensic science to assist in criminal investigations while privately seeking answers to the mystery of his own immortality.
Henry first died two centuries earlier while working as a physician aboard a ship engaged in the African slave trade. After refusing an order to cease treating an enslaved man, he was shot by one of the ship’s owners and thrown overboard. Instead of dying permanently, Henry reappeared moments later, alive, unclothed, and submerged in a nearby body of water. This pattern recurs with every subsequent death: his body vanishes, he resurrects in water, and the only lasting physical mark is the scar from his original gunshot wound. He has not aged since that first death.
Over the decades, Henry’s prolonged life has afforded him exceptional observational abilities and a vast reservoir of knowledge, qualities that impress many of his colleagues, including NYPD Detective Jo Martinez (Alana de la Garza). The only person aware of Henry’s true nature is Abe (Judd Hirsch), an antiquarian whom Henry and his late wife Abigail rescued as an infant from a German concentration camp during the Second World War.
Henry’s secret becomes further complicated by the presence of “Adam”, another immortal who claims to have lived for approximately two millennia and begins to stalk Henry, asserting a unique understanding of the curse they share.
