Summary
Carlton Dial, a retired British secret agent in the mould of James Bond, leaves MI6 but continues to apply his specialised skills in the private sector. He joins Intercept, a company that recovers stolen property for paying clients. Working on a commission basis, Dial maintains an unbroken record of successful retrievals when the series begins. Intercept equips its operatives with advanced, cutting‑edge technology, although Dial himself prefers to work independently. In the opening episode, however, he is compelled to accept a partner.
That partner is Harry Flask, whom Dial ultimately retains. Unlike traditional field partners, Harry never accompanies Dial on missions. Instead, he remains at Intercept headquarters, providing real‑time intelligence, analysis, and tactical guidance. Harry’s support is made possible through a suite of futuristic technologies: his operations room contains a large video display that shows everything Dial sees through a pair of specially designed contact lenses fitted with miniature cameras and environmental sensors. These devices allow Harry to scan Dial’s surroundings, identify threats, and gather data relevant to the mission.
Communication between the two is maintained via a radio receiver implanted in Dial’s head and a wristwatch capable of transmitting and receiving audio. This arrangement enables continuous conversation, though it occasionally results in Dial appearing to speak to himself in public. Harry also has access to an extensive computer database, which he uses to identify individuals Dial encounters, supply background information, and brief Dial on specialised knowledge required for undercover assignments in unfamiliar professions.
