Summary
In the far future, the greater expanse of the known galaxy is ruled autocratically by a triumvirate collectively referred to as Empire. This regime is sustained by the genetic dynasty, a succession of cloned Emperors derived from the long‑dead Cleon I. At any given time, the dynasty consists of three incarnations: Brother Day, the ruling Cleon in his prime; Brother Dusk, an elder Cleon who has retired into an advisory capacity; and Brother Dawn, the youngest clone, groomed from birth to inherit the mantle of Day. Unbeknownst to the public, the dynasty has been covertly overseen for four centuries by Lady Demerzel, Empire’s seemingly human majordomo who is, in truth, an ageless and singular surviving robot from a machine civilisation defeated six millennia earlier.
The young mathematical prodigy Gaal Dornick earns galactic acclaim after solving a formidable proof embedded within a contest devised by the renowned mathematician and psychohistorian Hari Seldon. Upon arriving on the imperial capital Trantor, Gaal becomes entangled in the escalating dispute between Seldon’s academic followers and the Cleonic regime over the validity of psychohistory, Seldon’s discipline for predicting the long‑term behaviour of vast populations. With Gaal confirming his calculations, Seldon publicly announces that the Empire is entering an irreversible period of decline, culminating in its eventual collapse. Although the fall cannot be prevented, he argues that its aftermath can be shortened through the establishment of a Foundation dedicated to preserving humanity’s scientific and cultural knowledge.
Initially dismissive, the Cleons reconsider after the first of several crises Seldon predicted comes to pass. They reluctantly permit Seldon and his adherents to establish the Foundation in exile on the remote frontier world Terminus. The narrative follows the centuries‑long struggle between the expanding Foundation and the entrenched Empire, the individuals whose lives intersect across these eras, and the unforeseen threat that emerges, one that lies beyond the predictive reach of Seldon’s psychohistory.
