Summary
Captain Robert Walton embarks on a scientific expedition to the North Pole in pursuit of discovery and renown. While trapped in pack ice, his crew sights two sleds crossing the frozen wastes. Hours later, they rescue the exhausted driver of the second sled: Victor Frankenstein. As he recovers, Victor recounts the events that brought him to the Arctic.
Born into a prosperous Geneva family in 1793, Victor resolves early to study medicine. Shortly before he departs for university in Germany, his mother dies of scarlet fever. Under the guidance of Professor Waldman, Victor develops a clandestine method for reanimating dead tissue. After briefly reviving a dog, he assembles a human being from cadaver parts and brings it to life. Horrified by the Creature’s appearance, he abandons it and collapses from illness, later nursed back to health by Henry Clerval and Elizabeth Lavenza.
Returning home, Victor learns that his younger brother William has been murdered and becomes convinced the Creature is responsible. Seeking solitude in the mountains, he encounters the being, now articulate, who recounts his own experiences: rejection by villagers, secret observation of a rural family, and a failed attempt to befriend their blind patriarch. After fleeing, he travelled to Geneva, where he accidentally killed William during a confrontation. The Creature demands that Victor create a female companion, promising to withdraw permanently from human society.
Victor reluctantly begins the work but destroys the unfinished “bride,” fearing the creation of a new species. Enraged, the Creature vows revenge, murders Clerval, and later kills Elizabeth on Victor’s wedding night. Victor’s father dies in grief, and Victor dedicates himself to pursuing the Creature across Europe and into the Arctic.
After hearing the narrative, Walton agrees to abandon the expedition and return home. Victor dies shortly afterward, still urging Walton to destroy the Creature. The being appears on the ship to mourn his creator, expresses remorse for the suffering he caused, and declares his intention to end his own life. Carrying Victor’s body, he disappears into the Arctic wilderness.
