Summary

Fringe centres on the investigations of FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, the brilliant but psychologically fragile Dr. Walter Bishop, and his resourceful son Peter Bishop, who together examine cases involving fringe science, including rare pathogens, cryptozoological entities, psychic and transhuman phenomena, teleportation, and other experimental technologies. Across the globe, a sequence of anomalous incidents collectively known as “the Pattern” emerges, encompassing events such as a new-born who ages to death within hours and a busload of passengers suspended in a resin‑like substance reminiscent of insects trapped in amber. The team is tasked with determining the origins and purpose of these occurrences.

Closely linked to the Pattern is Massive Dynamic, a powerful multinational research corporation that holds patents for numerous advanced technologies. Opposing them is ZFT, a bioterrorist organisation orchestrating many of the Pattern‑related events as part of a broader plan to trigger a catastrophic technological singularity.

A unifying element between these factions is Cortexiphan, a nootropic compound developed decades earlier by Walter Bishop and his former partner William Bell, now the chairman of Massive Dynamic. Olivia, and several other children, were test subjects in the original Cortexiphan trials, a fact that becomes central to the unfolding narrative.

The first season concludes with Olivia crossing into a parallel universe, where she finally encounters William Bell and discovers a world marked by subtle and profound divergences from her own, including the continued presence of the World Trade Centre.
