Summary

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is presented as the creation of acclaimed horror novelist and self‑described “fabulist” Garth Marenghi, author of such fictional genre titles as Afterbirth, in which a mutated placenta terrorises Bristol, and Crab!, hailed by Hard Gore Magazine as “one of the three best horror books about crabs ever written.” In the programme’s fictional backstory, Marenghi expanded into television production during the 1980s, writing and starring in a series purportedly so unconventional and alarming that Channel 4 executives refused to broadcast it at the time. According to this framing narrative, the network has only released the series decades later, during a supposed period of severe programming scarcity.

The broadcast version intercuts the original “lost” episodes with contemporary interviews featuring Marenghi and his collaborators, publisher‑producer Dean Learner and actor Todd Rivers. The resulting programme satirises low‑budget 1980s genre television and is framed as an unsettling depiction of hospital life, filtered through Marenghi’s exaggerated sense of artistic importance.
