Summary
Two students, Dan and Abbie, take temporary holiday employment at a museum that once served, two centuries earlier, as the residence of the affluent Leadbetter family. While exploring the collection, they become intrigued by an African carving that unexpectedly emits a resonant sound. A disembodied voice then summons them back through time to the year 1772. Upon arrival, Dan finds himself transformed into a kitchen servant, while Abbie assumes the role of a young member of the Leadbetter household.
Their journey into the past is revealed to be the result of Ngo, an enslaved boy possessing unusual abilities. Facing the threat of being forcibly returned to the brutal conditions of the Caribbean sugar plantations, Ngo has manipulated a temporal passage linking the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. His intention is to bring Dan and Abbie into his era so they can assist him in securing his freedom and returning to Sierra Leone.
