Summary
Earth is invaded by an interstellar terrorist organisation known as Big Fire (renamed the Gargoyle Gang in the American adaptation), commanded by the ruthless Emperor Guillotine. Operating from a multicoloured spacecraft concealed on the ocean floor, Guillotine directs his forces as they abduct leading scientists to construct an army of engineered monsters intended to facilitate global conquest.
During one such attack, a young boy, Daisaku Kusama (Johnny Sokko in the American version), and Jūrō Minami (Jerry Mano), a junior agent of the peacekeeping organisation Unicorn, are shipwrecked when their vessel is destroyed by the sea monster Dakolar.
Captured by Big Fire, they escape into an underground complex where a giant, pharaoh‑like robot is being built by the imprisoned scientist Lucius Guardian. Realising he will not survive, Guardian entrusts the robot’s control device to Daisaku and Jūrō and triggers an atomic self‑destruct mechanism that obliterates the base. The resulting radiation activates the robot, which imprints on Daisaku and will obey only his commands.
Recognising the boy’s unique bond with the machine, Jūrō and his superior, Azuma, invite Daisaku to join Unicorn and use the mighty Giant Robo to combat Big Fire’s escalating campaign against Earth.
