Summary

The narrative centres on seventeen‑year‑old Kazuko Yoshiyama, who inadvertently acquires a supernatural ability after inhaling a lavender‑scented chemical in her school laboratory. She later confesses her feelings to her classmate Kazuo, who rejects her and discloses that he is a visitor from the twenty‑seventh century conducting experiments on twentieth‑century humans using self‑produced compounds. Although he arrived only three weeks earlier, he implanted fabricated memories into those around him so that they would believe he had long been part of their lives.

Kazuko is initially distressed that her first romantic experience has been shaped by mind‑altering substances, but she ultimately forgives Kazuo upon realising that his manipulation of her emotions stemmed from his affection for her. Kazuo explains that he is developing a new chemical that will enable his return to his own era. Before departing, he transports Kazuko to a traumatic incident from seven years earlier, when she watched helplessly as her younger sister Miyoko nearly drowned. Although Kazuko hopes that revisiting the event will allow her to overcome her lingering fear, her incorporeal time‑travel form prevents her from intervening, forcing her to relive the distress without altering the outcome.

Upon returning to the present, Kazuo erases Kazuko’s memories of him and his abilities. Later, Miyoko recounts the near‑drowning and assures Kazuko that she survived only because Kazuko called out to her, a revelation that restores Kazuko’s sense of agency despite the loss of her memories.
