Summary

The narrative begins in a distant future characterised by technological refinement and social tranquillity. Thirteen‑year‑old Alana spends her time developing her kinetic abilities through a device known as the transducer, while enjoying the conveniences of an advanced society in which everyday tasks, such as washing and clothing maintenance, are accomplished effortlessly. Her mother serves on a temporal research team investigating the environmentally devastated twenty‑sixth century. When Alana secretly enters the laboratory to witness her mother’s return from a mission, she instead encounters a renegade named Silverthorn, who escapes custody by seizing Alana and activating the time machine, propelling them both into the twentieth century.

Alana regains consciousness on a rubbish dump in Sydney, disoriented by the noise, pollution, and unfamiliar environment. She is soon befriended by Jenny, a rebellious teenager with purple hair, along with Jenny’s mother Irene and younger brother Petey, whose fascination with science fiction leads him to suspect that Alana is extraterrestrial. Much of the ensuing narrative centres on Alana’s cultural dislocation as she attempts to navigate twentieth‑century norms, attend Jenny’s school, and locate both Silverthorn and the time machine before its automated return to her own era.

In the final confrontation, Jenny is critically injured, prompting Alana to transport her to the future for medical treatment, thereby establishing the premise for the sequel series Tomorrow’s End. The continuation follows Alana and Jenny as they travel to Silverthorn’s native time period in an effort to prevent the catastrophe that will ultimately endanger the future.
