Summary

This two‑part American drama centres on a hidden colony of survivors who have lived for more than forty years inside a sunken ocean liner. During a routine underwater survey, divers locate the wreck of the Goliath, a 1,000‑ton luxury cruise ship torpedoed by a German U‑boat in 1938. While examining the vessel, diver Paul Cabot is shocked to see the face of a young woman staring back at him from behind a porthole.

The United States Navy investigates his claim and discovers a self‑sustaining community of over 300 people who have survived within the submerged ship under the authoritarian but ostensibly benevolent rule of Third Engineer John McKenzie and his lieutenant, Wesket. Over the decades, the inhabitants have developed an apparently utopian society, cultivating food in hydroponic gardens, extracting oxygen from seawater through electrolysis, and generating illumination using bioluminescent algae.

However, the community is far from perfect. A faction of impoverished outcasts known as the “bow people,” led by the rebellious Ryker, regularly challenges McKenzie’s authority. As tensions escalate, the fragile social order collapses, and the majority of the Goliath’s residents ultimately choose to abandon the sunken vessel in search of a new life on the surface.
