Summary
A sixth‑grade student, Kolya Gerasimov, discovers a functioning time machine hidden in the basement of an old Moscow house. Activating the device transports him into the 21st century, where he is permitted to explore the unfamiliar future world. During his visit, Kolya inadvertently witnesses the arrival of two space pirates from Saturn. Their objective is to steal a device known as the Mielophone, a piece of advanced technology capable of reading thoughts.
The Mielophone is being used for scientific experiments by Alisa Seleznyova, a young researcher who studies animal cognition. When the pirates attempt to seize the device, Kolya intervenes, successfully rescuing it and returning with it to the 20th century. However, the pirates, and Alisa, manage to follow him back through time.
Once in the past, Alisa knows only that Kolya is a student at a particular school, but she has no idea what he looks like. The pirates, meanwhile, have seen Kolya’s face but know nothing about his identity or whereabouts. Their conflicting fragments of information set the stage for a pursuit in which each party attempts to locate the boy for very different reasons.
