Summary
Carmen, Anne, and Laura are seventeen and preparing for their A‑level examinations. United by a shared desire to escape the monotony of Dullsville and achieve wealth and fame, they seize what appears to be an extraordinary opportunity when a local entrepreneur and his enigmatic driver present Carmen with an irresistible offer. The driver intends to deliver Carmen to Sir Bernard and promises that, in return for her cooperation, her friends will share in the resulting good fortune.
Three years later, the dream has collapsed. The driver abandons Carmen to gruelling work in a chicken-processing factory before disappearing. Anne has fled to the far side of the world, and Laura is now the exhausted mother of two. Their ambitions of glamour and success seem long forgotten, until the driver returns, once again seeking Carmen.
Anne’s supposed paradise in New Zealand is proving disappointingly imperfect, while Laura feels increasingly burdened by the demands of her family. Carmen, meanwhile, is rising in society after promising the driver she would dine alone with Sir Bernard, despite her love for someone else. When she breaks that promise, the driver demands repayment.
It falls to Laura to outwit the driver’s increasingly malevolent schemes. Yet the driver soon appears to triumph: Carmen is to be offered as a sacrificial virgin to Sir Bernard, in exchange for the restoration of Anne’s wellbeing and the preservation of Laura’s fragile family life. But none of them have accounted for the unexpected strength of ordinary women, or the transformative power of love.
