Summary
The Antinéa, an ageing cargo vessel, moves steadily across the Indian Ocean. Life on deck is unhurried: a Japanese passenger practises martial arts, while another traveller plays blues melodies on a harmonica. Time drifts by without incident. Below deck, however, the ship’s tranquillity masks a growing threat. In the holds, sacks of wheat are infested with a species of insect that is unusually prolific, voracious, and increasingly resistant to conventional insecticides.
In Geneva, at the Omni national Bureau of Food, Deputy Director Jean‑Marc Haller realises the danger posed by this shipment. If the contaminated cargo reaches Wahdi, the nation expecting the delivery, the insects could infiltrate and destroy the country’s entire grain reserves. With his superior, Dr Schiller, unavailable, Haller must make a critical decision without guidance or authorisation.
As a journalist begins probing the story, entomologists finally identify the insect: a mutated strain originating from Tibet. Alarmed by its reproductive speed, researchers warn that global cereal stocks could be exhausted within months if the species spreads unchecked. In response, governments urgently convene leading experts to coordinate research and develop a strategy to eradicate the threat.
Simultaneously, authorities across multiple nations begin tracking the movements of individuals who may have transported the insects, knowingly or otherwise, fearing that even a single contaminated traveller could accelerate the spread beyond containment.
