Summary
After witnessing the devastation of the war in Sarajevo, Lieutenant Thomas Hobbes is prepared to leave military life behind and begin a peaceful future with his fiancée, Sophie. However, the Army assigns him one final mission: to evaluate a classified combat‑training program known as Harsh Realm, an advanced virtual‑reality simulation designed for military use.
Once inside Harsh Realm, Hobbes quickly finds himself fighting for survival. He forms an uneasy alliance with Mike Pinnochio, a cynical virtual soldier, as he attempts to complete his objective, defeating Omar Santiago, the simulation’s highest‑ranking and most dangerous player. As Hobbes progresses through the program, he discovers that Harsh Realm is far more than a simple training exercise. The simulation operates as a fully realised world with its own power structures, dangers, and moral ambiguities.
Most alarming of all, Hobbes learns that he is unable to leave. Trapped within a digital environment governed by no rules and offering no mercy, he must navigate its shifting alliances and hidden threats while searching for a way back to the real world.
