Summary
Set in a near-future Japan, the series explores a society in which individuals known as Variants, who possess supernatural abilities, face discrimination, surveillance, and social exclusion. Many Variants are confined to a settlement known as Naraku, where they are closely monitored by the Variant Crime Unit (VCU).
The story follows Umin, a 21-year-old Variant who secretly serves as an informant for the VCU, and Emma, a 23-year-old member of the influencer group L, which advocates for the rights and freedoms of Variants through online broadcasts. Although both possess only limited abilities, their chance meeting gradually draws them into a conflict involving oppression, identity, and the struggle for equality.
As their relationship develops, Umin and Emma become increasingly connected to the wider tensions between the authorities and the Variant community, forcing them to confront questions of loyalty, freedom, and the future of their society.
