Summary
In 2034, following a global apocalypse, the North Sea island of Helgoland has become the last secure refuge for humanity. A rigid totalitarian system governs the settlement, enforcing a strict population limit of 513 inhabitants and maintaining order through an inhumane social ranking mechanism that evaluates each resident’s worth according to their perceived usefulness. Scarcity of resources and the island’s isolation have transformed Helgoland into a controlled micro‑society where survival depends on compliance and productivity.
As the regime tightens its grip, tensions rise within the community, whose members live under constant assessment and the threat of expulsion. The island’s fragile stability is further undermined by the emergence of a hostile force on the mainland. This external threat prepares to invade Helgoland, placing the remaining survivors at risk and challenging the authoritarian system that has defined life since the apocalypse.
The narrative centres on Helgoland’s struggle to preserve its last bastion of human civilisation while confronting both internal oppression and an impending external assault, framing the island as the final contested ground in a devastated world.
