Summary

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is an action‑adventure television series, loosely inspired by the Hercules of Greek mythology, and distinguished by its blend of heroic drama and light‑hearted humour. In the series’ mythology, Hercules is the illegitimate son of Zeus, king of the gods, and a mortal woman of exceptional beauty. As a demigod, Hercules possesses physical strength far surpassing that of ordinary men, though he does not share the full divine powers of the Olympian pantheon.

The narrative is set in motion when Hera, Zeus’s wife and Hercules’ implacable enemy, murders Hercules’ wife and children in the opening episode. Her hostility stems from Hercules’ very existence, which serves as a constant reminder of Zeus’s infidelity. Stricken by grief, Hercules devotes himself to wandering the ancient world, offering aid to those threatened by monsters, tyrants, or the machinations of Hera and other gods.

Accompanying Hercules on many of his travels is Iolaus, his closest friend, who aspires to achieve heroic stature but never attains the legendary status of Hercules despite his determination and courage. The pair are also periodically joined by Salmonius, a travelling merchant whose entrepreneurial instincts and aversion to danger provide comic contrast to the more traditional heroics of Hercules and Iolaus.
