Summary

The series chronicles the life of Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, an immortal warrior known simply as “Mac” to his friends and as the Highlander to others of his kind. Immortals can only be killed by beheading. They live hidden among ordinary mortals, but when confronted by another immortal, they are compelled to fight. The victor beheads the defeated and absorbs the Quickening, a surge of power, knowledge, and life force transferred from one immortal to another. This cycle continues until only one remains.

Duncan has long attempted to withdraw from this endless conflict and live quietly among mortals. However, other immortals continually seek him out, forcing him to test his skills again and again. He must also contend with intrusive media attention and suspicious authorities.
