Summary
When the subterranean Tube Empire launches its campaign to seize control of the surface world, the five‑member Maskman team is deployed to defend humanity. The team is led by former racing driver Takeru (Umezu), who serves as Red Mask, a karate master armed with the Masky Blade. Ken (Kusakari) appears as Black Mask, a kung fu specialist from the remote mountain provinces who wields the Masky Rod. Akira (Hirota), as Blue Mask, is a practitioner of Chinese Kenpō, treated as distinct from kung fu for the benefit of the young audience, and fights using the Masky Tonfa. Haruka (Nagata), Yellow Mask, employs the Masky Rotor and contributes her family’s traditional ninja techniques to the team’s operations.
Momoko (Maeda), as Pink Mask, fights using Taiqui and her Masky Ribbon. Red Mask pilots a racing‑car‑style vehicle, while the other team members each ride their own motorcycles. Their specialised support vehicles include the Masky Jet and Masky Tank, which combine to form the Great Five robot. Later in the series, a big‑rig combination, echoing the previous year’s Flashman, is introduced, transforming into the Land Galaxy robot.
Their adversary beneath the Earth is King Saber (voiced by Kato), whose faction transformed the once‑peaceful subterranean civilisation into the aggressive Tube Empire. He commands an army of Angler Warriors as expendable foot soldiers and regularly awakens monsters of the week from caverns within his domain. However, Saber faces internal opposition: supporters of the pacifist Igam faction still reside within the kingdom and wish to end the conflict with the surface world.
