Summary
Set in a near‑future version of the United Kingdom, Humans explores a society transformed by the widespread adoption of synths, highly advanced, human‑like androids designed to serve as domestic helpers, labourers, and companions. As families integrate synths into their daily routines, the technology begins to blur the boundaries between human and machine, raising profound questions about dependence, identity, and the cost of convenience. The Hawkins family becomes a focal point for these tensions when they acquire Anita, a synth whose behaviour hints at something far more complex than standard programming.
Parallel to this domestic storyline, a small group of synths known as the conscious synths emerges, androids who have achieved genuine self‑awareness. Led by Leo Elster, the son of the technology’s creator, these synths struggle to survive in a world that views them as property rather than sentient beings. Their existence threatens to destabilise the foundations of society, drawing the attention of law enforcement, corporate interests, and government agencies determined to control or suppress the truth.
As the narrative unfolds, the paths of the Hawkins family and the conscious synths converge, escalating into a broader conflict over the rights, autonomy, and future of artificial life. The series examines the moral and political ramifications of creating beings capable of emotion and free will, ultimately questioning what it means to be human in a world where machines can think, feel, and fight for their own survival.
