Summary

Hypernauts follows three cadets, Sharkey, Ace and Max, from the Academy of Galactic Exploration, each of whom is talented but chronically undisciplined. At the outset of the series, the trio are assigned a punitive mission to retrieve an obsolete spy satellite. A mishap during the operation propels them far from known space, depositing them in the galactic core.

There they encounter Kulai, a member of the Pyran race who is fleeing a destructive, planet‑consuming force known as the Triiad. Pursuing her is Paiyin, another Pyran who has allied himself with the Triiad and is regarded as a traitor by his people. Kulai joins the cadets as they attempt to evade the Triiad and navigate the dangers of the galactic core.

During their flight, the group discovers the Star Ranger, an unmanned Earth vessel launched fifty years earlier. Larger and better equipped than their scoutship, it is controlled by Horten, a cantankerous onboard computer whose personality adds further friction to the crew’s already precarious situation.

Although the combined resources of the Star Ranger and their own ship would allow the cadets to return to Earth, they realise that doing so would lead the Triiad directly to humanity, an outcome Earth may not survive. Instead, the Hypernauts choose to remain in the galactic core, continuing their training through exploration while seeking a way home that will not endanger their planet. Kulai, initially unaware that the cadets are still adolescents, becomes their mentor and guide.

Along the way, the group acquires a creature known as a gloose. While the cadets treat it as a pet, Kulai regards it rather differently, as her people traditionally consider the species a food source.
