Summary

Ten individuals regain consciousness on the shoreline of what appears to be an uninhabited tropical island. None possesses any recollection of personal identity, background, or the circumstances that brought them there. In the absence of memory, each adopts the name printed on the tag of their clothing. Although the group initially attempts to cooperate for survival, divergent priorities and assertive personalities soon generate internal conflict. Chase, who advocates for a systematic exploration of the island, becomes a focal point of tension, clashing with KC, who doubts Chase’s competence in securing resources, and with Brody, whose escalating aggression culminates in an attempted sexual assault.

The fragile cohesion of the group collapses when Brody is discovered murdered. The remaining survivors, acting on suspicion and fear, conclude that Chase is responsible and render her unconscious. Upon awakening, Chase finds herself not on the island but inside a technologically advanced correctional facility in Texas. There she is informed that she and the other nine individuals are convicted violent offenders participating in a state‑run “rehabilitation simulation.” Their consciousnesses have been transferred into a computer‑generated island environment designed to evaluate whether they will revert to previous behavioural patterns when stripped of memory and placed under stress. The program is lethal: death within the simulation results in death in the real world.

Chase is subsequently returned to the simulated island, where the avatars of two prison marshals are introduced into the environment. Their purpose is to deliberately provoke discord, manipulate group dynamics, and accelerate psychological deterioration among the participants. As the simulation progresses, the prisoners begin to experience the gradual return of their real memories, further destabilising alliances and intensifying interpersonal conflict. The resurfacing of past identities, combined with external interference from the marshals, drives the group toward fragmentation, paranoia, and renewed violence, undermining the stated rehabilitative aims of the experiment.
