Summary
The series follows Dr David Banner, a gentle, introspective scientist whose quest to unlock humanity’s hidden reserves of strength led to an extraordinary and tragic transformation.
Banner’s obsession begins after he fails to save his wife from a burning car. Convinced that untapped physical power could have changed the outcome, he subjects himself to gamma‑radiation experiments. An accidental overdose produces a Jekyll‑and‑Hyde effect he cannot control: whenever anger or frustration overwhelms his normally calm demeanour, he becomes the Hulk, a towering, green‑skinned creature of immense strength. His shirt tears, his shoes vanish, but, true to family‑friendly convention, his trousers remain intact.
Following two feature‑length pilot films, the series settled into a format reminiscent of The Fugitive. Banner, constantly on the move, searches for a scientific cure while encountering strangers who alternately help, hinder or attempt to understand him. Each episode follows a familiar rhythm: Banner meets a sympathetic figure, trouble arises, emotions flare, and the Hulk emerges to confront the antagonists. Once the danger passes, Banner reverts to his mild‑mannered self and resumes his lonely journey.
The show’s recurring antagonist is Jack McGee, a persistent, headline‑driven reporter convinced that the Hulk is responsible for a murder. Determined to expose the creature, and unaware of Banner’s dual identity, McGee trails him across the country, adding a constant undercurrent of tension to Banner’s efforts to remain hidden.
