Summary
In the stillness of orbit, a routine docking manoeuvre with the International Space Station descends abruptly into catastrophe. Captain Anthony Kurz and his crew cease all communication, leaving mission control at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, led by operations chief Emil Durkhov, facing a mounting crisis. The station has slipped into an uncontrolled trajectory, threatening to drift irretrievably into space, and prospects for recovering the crew grow increasingly remote.
Meanwhile, only a few kilometres from Baikonur, Kazakh police officer Isaak Turgun, pragmatic, methodical, and unshakably rational, investigates a macabre discovery: a decapitated corpse coated in wax and positioned atop a rooftop. It is not the first such body he has encountered.
Identification confirms the victim’s identity beyond doubt: Anthony Kurz, the very astronaut believed to be stranded in orbit more than 500 kilometres above Earth. The paradox is absolute, the implications unfathomable. Only one person may possess the insight to unravel this aberration, the disgraced French astronaut Anna Zarathi.
