Summary
Schoolboy Norio (Monma) becomes aware that no one else in his household can hear Strauss’s Blue Danube waltz emanating from the radio. He is soon approached by his classmate Asako (Endo), who explains that the music originates from the Mutant Scientific Research Institute (MSRI), a clandestine organisation devoted to identifying, nurturing, and protecting children with extraordinary abilities. These children possess the capacity to perceive infrared frequencies, enabling them to detect sounds beyond the range of ordinary human hearing. A disembodied voice transmitted through the radio instructs all who can hear it to gather at Tokyo Tower, from where they are transported to the MSRI.
At the institute, Doctor Hijiri (Amamoto) issues each child an “R6” device that allows them to communicate with one another, and instructs them to return in one week. Back home, Norio and his newly acquainted companions attempt to recount their experience, but each loses consciousness whenever they try to mention the MSRI. Gradually, they uncover the truth: Earth has been scheduled for destruction, and they have been chosen by extra-terrestrial beings as the only humans deemed worthy of rescue. Norio must ultimately decide between departing the planet to live among aliens or remaining on Earth to perish in the impending catastrophe.
