Summary
Approximately five centuries in the future, global warfare has reduced civilization to scattered remnants. Limited technologies such as electricity and ground vehicles persist, but firearms have been abandoned in favour of melee weapons and crossbows.
In the region known as the Badlands, stretching between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River, a rigid feudal order has emerged. Barons govern distinct territories and control monopolies over vital commodities such as opium and fuel, maintaining stability through inter‑baron trade. Their societies rely on enslaved labourers called cogs and a prostitute class known as dolls. Military power is upheld by clippers, elite warriors bound by strict loyalty and prohibited from forming families; each force is commanded by a regent.
Several groups operate beyond baronial authority. Nomads range from bandit raiders to organized clans. The River King oversees waterborne trade and remains neutral in political disputes. The Totemists form isolated religious communities devoted to idol worship. The Widow leads a revolutionary anti‑feudal movement from her late husband’s former barony; although nominally accepted as a baron, she is widely scorned by her peers.
Information about lands beyond the Badlands is scarce. Fragmentary accounts suggest regions that are environmentally stable yet politically volatile. A legendary utopian city, Azra, is believed by some to lie outside the Badlands, though most inhabitants regard it as myth.
