Summary
Former Los Angeles Police Department detective Jack Whelan is drawn into an investigation involving a series of unusual attempted suicides. His inquiries lead him to a clandestine organisation known as Qui Reverti (those who return), whose members pursue a form of immortality by inhabiting new bodies after death. The group employs operatives referred to as Shepherds, who locate suitable hosts for returning souls and present them with personal triggers , objects associated with the individuals’ previous lives , to initiate the awakening process. Once awakened, the returning soul engages in a contest of wills with the host consciousness, with the defeated soul passing on to the afterlife. Whelan’s personal life is irrevocably damaged when his wife becomes the host for an intruding Qui Reverti member.
A related case involves Marcus Fox, a serial killer who re-emerges within the body of a young girl. The competing identities struggle for dominance, resulting in fragmented and confused memories. The conflict intensifies when the girl gains access to the Qui Reverti guidebook and attempts to apply its instructions without fully comprehending their implications.
