Summary
David Vincent, a respected architect, becomes inadvertently involved in an extra-terrestrial conspiracy after witnessing a UFO while travelling through the countryside at night. Although he immediately reports the sighting to a local sheriff and to his business partner, a return to the location reveals no physical evidence, and his account is dismissed as unreliable. Vincent is prepared to abandon the incident until a mysterious fire breaks out in his hotel room, prompting him to investigate further.
Vincent subsequently discovers that the hotel manager is an alien operative. The extra-terrestrials, originating from a dying world, have initiated a covert plan to seize control of Earth. Their strategy relies on assuming human form and infiltrating influential positions within society. Despite their outwardly human appearance, several physiological anomalies distinguish them from actual humans: the little finger extends at an unnatural angle, they possess no heartbeat, they emit a faint glow shortly before the energy sustaining their disguise fails, and upon death their bodies vanish in a cloud of red vapour.
Abandoning his architectural career, Vincent devotes himself entirely to exposing and resisting the invasion. His efforts centre on three objectives: persuading others of the reality of the threat, obtaining physical evidence to substantiate his claims, and disrupting alien operations wherever possible. The aliens, fully aware of his activities, allow him to continue unimpeded, believing that his reputation as an eccentric renders him harmless. Eliminating him, they reason, might lend credibility to his warnings.
