Summary
Darian Fawkes is introduced as a small‑time thief and con artist whose life changes dramatically after his brother arranges his release from jail on the condition that he participate in an experimental medical procedure. The operation implants a “quicksilver” gland in Fawkes’s brain, granting him the ability to become invisible. The process, however, carries significant risks: without regular doses of a specialised counter‑agent, the gland induces severe psychological instability and ultimately madness.
Following the death of his brother, Fawkes is compelled to work for a covert government organisation operating under the public guise of the Department of Fish & Wildlife. In exchange for continued access to the counter‑agent that stabilises the gland, he undertakes assignments in which his invisibility provides a tactical advantage. His reluctant service, combined with the constant threat posed by the quicksilver gland, forms the central tension of the narrative.
