Summary
The programme’s original format followed two American astronauts, Mac and Hector, whose space capsule is thrown off course by unusual turbulence and deposited in a prehistoric era. There they are reluctantly absorbed into a caveman community ruled in a rigid, authoritarian manner by the Boss. The astronauts develop a close association with a family of cave dwellers, Gronk and Shad and their children, Mlor and Breer, while attempting to repair their spacecraft. Much of the humour arises from Mac and Hector’s clumsy efforts to avoid violating tribal taboos or bewildering the cavemen with modern technology. The premise shared certain superficial similarities with Gilligan’s Island, particularly in its use of stranded protagonists negotiating unfamiliar social structures.
In the revised format, Mac and Hector succeed in restoring their capsule and returning to the 20th century. Unbeknownst to them, Gronk, Shad, Mlor and Breer have stowed away aboard the craft and are transported into modern America. The prehistoric family must now confront contemporary life directly, encountering technologies and social conventions previously known only through the astronauts’ descriptions. Mac and Hector assume responsibility for concealing the true origins of their companions, frequently struggling to prevent misunderstandings and mishaps as the cave family attempts to adapt to modern society.
The retooled premise did not improve the programme’s reception, and It’s About Time was cancelled after the completion of its first season.
